On this day 30-11-1914

Liberal candidate, Sir James Brown Dougherty, is returned unopposed in the by-election for the Londonderry City constituency. Dougherty was a Presbyterian Minister, academic and also held many public offices, including that of Under Secretary for Ireland. The constituency had been gained for the Liberals the previous year by David Cleghorn Hogg and his death in August 1914 necessitated the by-election. Although a marginal, the recently agreed all party truce meant that Dougherty was not opposed. He did not stand in Londonderry at the 1918 general election when the seat was won by Sinn Fein. He was the last ever Liberal to represent Londonderry City or any of its successor constituencies.
