England Objects to the Treaty of Versailles, June 1, 1919

Journal of Liberal History

On this day 27-9-1842

The marriage takes place of Peter Alfred Taylor and Clementia Doughty, a remarkable, radical couple who became engaged in all the main political debates of the day. Taylor was wealthy through the family firm, Courtaulds and sat as an advanced Liberal for Leicester from 1862-1884. Taylor was prominent in the Anti-Corn Law League. He and Clementia sought to promote manhood suffrage, separation of church and state, nationalism in Italy as Clementia was a friend of Mazzini, emancipation in the American slave states, women’s suffrage, married women’s property rights and just about every radical cause Liberals could espouse.
