Kimberley’s elevation came in the wake of the death of Earl Granville, one of Gladstone’s closest colleagues who had led the Liberals in the Lords for thirty years. Kimberley held the post until 1894 when he made way for Lord Rosebery. Following Rosebery’s resignation, Kimberley returned to lead the Liberals in the Lords until his death in 1902.
